A couple of years ago I found a site called (Peoplesound) that had MP3 tracks from unsigned bands for download. These were in various categories that allowed you to find the type of music you were interested in. If you were lucky you could come across some real gems and it was during this first foray that I came across Lazydog. Take a listen to Vanitarium.

I got fairly bored of Peoplesound when it didn’t seem to be updated that often. Now, like most things on the web, it has all come on a great deal and there are plenty more sites out there offering some great music. Peoplesound is still going but there are others out there too, including GarageBand and, more surprisingly, Amazon.

You don’t even have to stick with unknowns Amazon, for example, are currently offering MP3’s from the likes of The Hives, The Strokes and up-and-coming Joss Stone. But the the biggest fun comes from trying to spot someone unknown who is going to be big or even just good enough to make it to your MP3 player.

Currently I am listening to Little Mojo, especially the exquisite track Circles and the UK-based Silverman.

So you don’t have to put up with 99p per track formula music that other sites are pushing. Nor do you need to worry about any intrusive digital rights management (DRM). Just the fun of spotting a winner.
