I previously have said that I don’t “get” Facebook. What I didn’t say was that I do understand and get social networking in a broader context. So, for example, I am a member of LinkedIn, the business networking site based on the principle that everyone if no more that “six degrees” away from anyone else.
However, in all these cases and particularly with Facebook and LinkedIn they can just be come a place for serial collectors of links to people. It’s a bit like that scramble to increase your eBay rating – just how many people can you link with. It can also become very compulsive particularly as you reach those important milestome – 10, 100, 1000 etc.
Perhaps I have answered my own question. Perhaps THAT is the point of Facebook. Simply to collect people.
