I was watching the reruns of the latest series of Doctor Who on BBC3 last night and they showed my all time favourite episode – Blink. I have seen it countless times now and I never tire of it. The idea behind the episode is that statues aren’t really stone carvings but beings from another dimension that can move when they are not being looked at. What is most interesting is that the Doctor hardly appears at all – the most time he spends on screen is when he appears in a DVD recording. The episode is no worse for the lack of the Doctor which is testimony to the skill of the writer Steven Moffat who also wrote the excellent comedy Coupling. Even after several showings Blink still retains its creepiness and leaves Helen behind a cushion, much as when she was a child watching! If you haven’t seen it then it is worth buying the series boxed set for this episode and the appearance of John Simm as the Master.
