I thought four-way stops were rididculous when I first moved here (you can generally work out who goes next, but its often a judgement call) but one experience changed me into a big fan.  One day the traffic lights at a major intersection failed.  But instead of there being the massive free-for-all that you&#039;d get in England, everyone just treated it like a four-way stop, politely taking their turn.  (As you&#039;re taught to do in your U.S. driving lessons.) Everyone kept moving and there was no significant hold-up.  Of course politeness is &#039;encouraged&#039; by the fact that they reckon some 30% of drivers (here in Texas) have a firearm in the car.  That&#039;s why the signs say &quot;Drive Friendly&quot;!</description>
